Verse of the Day: 1 Timothy 4:8
“For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.”
Godliness is not merely a moral lifestyle or religious behavior. It is the living expression of God Himself flowing through a believer’s life. Scripture calls this a mystery, because it is God imparting His own life into us and being lived out through us. This divine life does not operate automatically—it requires our cooperation and daily exercise.
When Paul speaks of exercising unto godliness, he carefully distinguishes this from physical training. He is not pointing to discipline of the body, nor to refinement of the mind, emotions, or will. The training that produces godliness takes place in our spirit. This is the deepest part of our being, where God dwells and from which His life is expressed.
To “exercise yourself” does not mean strengthening the natural self. It means engaging the regenerated spirit—turning to God in prayer, calling on His name, setting the mind on the spirit, and responding to His inward leading. Godliness, then, is not something we imitate; it is something we live by exercising the spirit where God’s life is active.
As we learn to practice this spiritual exercise, our daily life becomes an expression of God. Our words, attitudes, and actions increasingly reflect His nature. This is true godliness—not effort-driven religion, but a life that reveals God through a spirit strengthened and exercised.
Reflection:
Where do you rely most, is it on natural effort or on the exercise of your spirit? How can you intentionally turn to your spirit throughout the day?
Prayer:
Lord, teach me to turn inward to my spirit where You dwell. Train me to exercise this life You have placed within me, that my living would express You in all things. Amen.
