Living By The Word
Verse of The Day: Matthew 4:4
“But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
Food is necessary for the body, but Jesus reminds us that there is another hunger that food cannot satisfy. Our hearts were created to live in fellowship with God, and His Word is one of the primary ways He nourishes us.
Jesus spoke these words when He was hungry and being tempted by the devil. He could have used His power to turn stones into bread, but He chose obedience to His Father above satisfying an immediate desire. His response teaches us something important: not everything we urgently want is what we most urgently need.
Life constantly presents us with voices telling us what will make us happy, successful or secure. Yet the believer cannot build life merely on feelings, circumstances, opinions or desires. We need to hear what God has said.
God's Word feeds our faith when we are discouraged. It gives direction when we are confused. It corrects us when we wander. It reminds us of who God is when circumstances make us question His goodness.
Reading Scripture is therefore more than completing a daily routine. It is coming to God with an open heart and saying, “Lord, speak to me. I want my life to be governed by Your truth.”
Bread can strengthen the body for a day, but God's Word strengthens the heart for the journey.
Reflection:
What has been influencing your decisions recently: your feelings, circumstances, people's opinions or the Word of God? Am I simply reading the Bible, or am I allowing what God says to guide the way I live?
Prayer:
Father, give me a genuine hunger for Your Word. Help me to treasure Your truth above the many voices around me. Holy Spirit, open my understanding as I read the Scriptures and help me to obey what You reveal.
