Fruit That Speaks
Verse of The Day: Matthew 7:18
“A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”
You do not need to be a gardener to know that the kind of fruit a tree produces tells you something about the tree itself. No matter how attractive its leaves appear, the true condition of a tree becomes evident when it begins to bear fruit.
Jesus used this simple illustration to teach a profound spiritual truth. Our conduct reveals what is taking place within us. We may impress people with our words, religious activities or outward appearance, but the evidence of genuine spiritual life is seen in our character and daily choices.
Consider how you respond when someone offends you, when things do not go your way or when nobody is watching. These moments often reveal more about our spiritual condition than what we say in public.
However, Jesus was not teaching that believers would never make mistakes. Rather, He was emphasising that our lives should reflect the nature of the One to whom we belong.
The Christian life is not about struggling to produce good behaviour through personal effort alone. It begins with a transformed heart through faith in Christ. As we abide in Him and yield to the Holy Spirit, His life becomes increasingly evident in our attitudes, relationships and actions.
We must therefore pay attention not merely to what we do, but to the source from which our actions proceed.
When Christ is truly at work within us, His character will increasingly become visible through us.
Reflection:
If someone were to examine your reactions, conversations and relationships over the past week, what would they discover about your walk with Christ?
Are there attitudes or behaviours you have become comfortable with that do not reflect His character?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the new life I have received in Christ. Search my heart and reveal anything within me that is inconsistent with Your nature. Help me not to settle for outward appearances while neglecting my relationship with You.
