Make Room For The Word
Verse of The Day: James 1:21
“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
Have you ever read a passage of Scripture and immediately thought of someone else who needed to hear it? Perhaps a friend, a family member, or someone whose behaviour has troubled you. It is often easier to recognise what God's Word should correct in others than to acknowledge what it is confronting in us.
Yet, Scripture is first an invitation to examine our own hearts.
James reminds us that receiving God's Word requires more than simply hearing or understanding it. There must be a willingness to surrender whatever stands in the way of its influence in our lives.
Sometimes, the greatest obstacle is not ignorance of Scripture but our resistance to what we already know. We may hold tightly to bitterness while reading about forgiveness, defend our pride while learning about humility, or excuse habits that God's Word clearly challenges.
The instruction to receive the Word with meekness speaks of a heart that is teachable, one that allows God to correct its thinking and redirect its desires.
Notice also that James describes the Word as already planted within us. Through the gospel, God has begun a work that His Word continues to accomplish as we respond in faith and obedience.
The question, therefore, is not merely how much Scripture we know, but how willing we are to let its truth govern our lives.
God's Word must have access to the areas of our lives we would rather keep hidden.
Reflection:
Is there an attitude, habit, or area of your life where you have been resisting what God has already revealed through His Word?
Prayer:
Father, give me a humble and teachable heart. Help me receive Your Word without resistance or excuses.
